Monday Update

One more day until the election. I am excited and feel that if we all get out and vote, we really can make a change in the world. I have always wanted to do something that will help to better our country and now thanks to Barack Obama I finally can. As Obama says, "I'm asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington...I'm asking you to believe in yours."

Yesterday was a great day. We had Yemista for the Soup Sunday meal. We had never made Yemista before and it was delicious. It was a lot of vegetable chopping for Doug, but I think he really enjoyed seeing the end product and how everyone liked it so much (except for the kids). Everyone, except for Mark, stayed to watch Dexter. It was another great episode.

Sunday Update

Just a few more days until the election. I wish that every four years November 4th was a Holiday. I will wait until after work on the 4th like I always do. Doug and I will go to vote together. The kids have already voted, I'm proud of them.

Last night Doug and I watched Kung Fu Panda. It had us both laughing out loud at times. I recommend seeing it. We also stayed up to watch SNL. I can't believe McCain's willingness to go on national TV with Tina Fey as the fake Sarah Palin hawking "Palin in 2012" t-shirts on the side.

It looks like my Dad is going to stop by after church today, that should be a real 'treat'. He wants to talk with Doug about light fixtures and his fuse box in the basement.

Well I have to make dessert for tonight and do my Sunday house cleaning. I also can't wait for Dexter tonight.

At the end of the September 26th presidential debate, John McCain stared into the cameras and made a powerful, emotional statement. He said:

I know the veterans and I know them well. And I know that they know that I'll take care of them. And I've been proud of their support and of their recognition of my service to the veterans. And I love them, and I'll take care of them. And they know that I'll take care of them.

But he has not taken care of veterans, according to an article in the Phoenix New Times. In fact, homeless vets in McCain's home state feel betrayed by McCain, a fellow serviceman and perhaps the country's most famous injured war veteran.

Saturday Update

Yesterday was very busy. I worked on the leaf cleanup in the yard. I ended up with 10 bags and 3 trash cans and the yard still looks like I have not done any leaf clean up. That's what you get when you have two huge trees in the yard.

I also put up fake spiders webs and the pumpkins to greet our trick or treat friends. I think we had a record year of 10 kids and 6 adults. They all said there were not many kids out this year. It sure has changed since we were young. All in all it was a very fun Halloween. The kids were the little neighbor girl (nurse) and her baby brother (duck) from across the street, my grand nephew Nick (Marion Indians fan) and 3 of his friends (terrorist, mobster, and I think a second mobster), grand niece Ella (pink power ranger), grand nephew Breckin (Marion Indians fan), friends Nick (wizard) and Ana (fairy princess on a horse). The adults were my niece Amy and her husband Pat, my brother Dan and sister in-law Gail and friends Jacob (vampire or magician?) and Sara (witch?). Jacob and Sara were dressed for a Halloween party they were going to later in the evening. I will post pictures either later today or tomorrow.

The Arizona Republic is now reporting that a series of new polls show us "neck and neck" with John McCain in Arizona. According to the Republic, Senator McCain is "struggling in his own backyard."

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer said Republican nominee John McCain has spent his entire political life blocking renewable energy.

A look at Barack Obama's environmental platform and record

Calls for cutting U.S. carbon dioxide emissions 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. Would accomplish this through a cap-and-trade system that would auction off 100 percent of emissions permits, making polluters pay for the CO2 they emit.

Would channel revenue raised from auctioning emissions permits -- between $30 billion and $50 billion a year -- toward developing and deploying clean energy technology, creating "green jobs," and helping low-income Americans afford higher energy bills.

Calls for 25 percent of U.S. electricity to come from renewable sources by 2025, and for 30 percent of the federal government's electricity to come from renewables by 2020.

Proposes investing $150 billion over 10 years in R&D for renewables, biofuels, efficiency, "clean coal," and other clean tech.

Calls for improving energy efficiency in the U.S. 50 percent by 2030.

Calls for 36 billion gallons of biofuels to be used in the U.S. each year by 2022 and 60 billion gallons of biofuels to be used in the U.S. each year by 2030.

Calls for all new buildings in the U.S. to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Calls for reducing U.S. oil consumption by at least 35 percent, or 10 million barrels a day, by 2030.

Introduced the Health Care for Hybrids Act, which would have the federal government help cover health-care costs for retired U.S. autoworkers in exchange for domestic auto companies investing at least 50 percent of the savings into production of more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Supports raising fuel-economy standards for automobiles to 40 miles per gallon and light trucks to 32 mpg by 2020.

Supports a phaseout of incandescent light bulbs by 2014.

Cosponsor of the Coal-to-Liquid Fuel Promotion Act. After being badgered by MoveOn and other progressives over the issue, he "clarified" his position by saying he would support liquefied coal only if it emitted 20 percent less carbon over its lifecycle than conventional fuels.

Has been endorsed by Friends of the Earth Action, in part for his opposition to a summer "gas-tax holiday" that McCain and Clinton support. (FoE Action had previously endorsed John Edwards.)

Happy Halloween

Today I plan to clean up leaves from the yard. The wind was kind enough to blow most of the leaves into the same general area in a big pile. All I need is to get out my leaf vac and suck them up and bag them. It looks like I'm going to need a lot of bags though.

I also plan to put up my Halloween spider webs and other decorations. I hope we get a few more trick-or-treaters than normal. We are giving out full size candy bars once again this year. If they were good enough for us as kids they are good for the kids of today.

Tuesday was a tough day to be outside in Greater Philadelphia. The rain poured and the wind howled. The weather turned so nasty that the fifth (and possibly final) game of the World Series scheduled for the night was postponed.

John McCain canceled a Tuesday morning rally at Memorial Stadium in the Philly suburb Quakertown.

The crowd was multi-racial, wildly enthusiastic and drenched. Attendee Charlene McGrady was impressed with the enthusiasm but not surprised by the crowd's tenacity.

"The passion and persistence of Obama and the crowd that turned out to hear and see him despite the weather speaks volumes," said McGrady. "It's a telling contrast to the fair-weather attitude of the McCain campaign, which threw in the towel at the first drop of rain." She went on to add that John McCain and Sarah Palin went ahead with an indoor rally today in Hershey, Pennsylvania, which caused McGrady to comment wryly: "$150,000 for clothes and they apparently didn't buy her a raincoat."

McGrady felt the Pennsylvania cancellation was indicative of the entire McCain campaign, adding: "What a washout his campaign has been, in more ways than one."

In the biggest mock teen election in the country, the students chose Obama for President. They have correctly predicted the President in the 2000 and 2004 Presidential Races. Channel One News which has 6 million middle and high school viewers chose Lordstown High School, in the swing state, of Pennsylvania to announce the results. Students at Lordstown and 300,000 other students from across the United States voted in this mock election. Obama swept 43 of the states to win in this mock electorial election. Obama received 58.5% of the vote compared to McCain who received 41.5%.

Thurday Update

Yeah, the last day of work for me this week. Yesterday was pretty slow at work. I was glad that the weather was nice when I got home. I was able to take a walk without freezing.

After supper Doug and I watched Barack Obama's 30 minute special. I had tears in my eyes several times during that half hour. I don't know how anyone could not be moved by what he says. I think he is the best thing that could happen to this country right now. It has been a very rough 8 years and we need change.

I also stayed up until 11 (way past my bedtime) to watch Bill Clinton join Barack at a rally in Florida. Another moving speech by Bill Clinton. Whenever I hear Bill Clinton and Barack Obama speak I get such a calm feeling. On the other hand when I hear John MaCain and especially Sarah Palin speak it is like hearing fingernails on a chalk board.

Tornado Damaged Community Wins Award by Associated Press

PARKERSBURG, IA--- Aplington-Parkersburg High has been

awarded $25,000 to help rebuild the school, which was leveled by a

tornado last May.

The school was awarded the money in a contest by Henkel, a

consumer goods marketer. The "Henkel Helps Schools" contest asked

parents, teachers, students and community members from across the

country to nominate a school deserving of enhancements.

Aplington-Parkersburg was selected as the winner in an online

vote.

The money will be used to replace classroom supplies such as

textbooks, desks and computers.

Company representatives will present the check to school

officials next week at Aplington-Parkersburg Middle School, which

is serving as the high school's temporary home.

Two days until Halloween. I have a vacation day on Halloween, that will be nice. We did our annual pumpkin carving night with Sara, Jacob, Ana & Nick last night. Doug made home-made pizza. He tried a new bar-b-q beef pizza. It was very good. Ana, Doug and I made house pumpkins. They were all very different and I like Doug's the most. I will be posting pictures of them by Halloween.
